A Safari extension for Mac that makes YouTube's video ads disappear. It ships as a free app from the Mac App Store, which installs the extension into Safari. It works by replacing YouTube's watch player with YouTube's own embed player, which doesn't serve ads. ### Which browsers? Safari only. It's a Safari extension, so it can't run in Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Brave, Arc, Vivaldi or Opera. For Chrome or Firefox, uBlock Origin is the standard answer and it's free. Adios isn't an option there. ### Which macOS versions? macOS 13 Ventura or later, on Apple silicon and Intel. Older versions aren't supported. ### iPhone? iPad? Windows? No to all three. Adios is a Mac app. iOS Safari does support extensions, so an iPhone version is possible in principle, but it doesn't exist. Windows never will — Safari extensions need Safari. ### Is the video quality worse? No. Same video, same resolutions, up to whatever the video offers. Captions, playback speed and fullscreen all work too. ### Do Shorts and live streams work? Not reliably. Adios is built for regular youtube.com/watch pages. Shorts, live streams and premieres are put together differently and aren't covered. ### Can I keep the normal player sometimes? Yes — switch the popup to Manual. YouTube then behaves normally until you click “Remove ads for this video”. ### Will it slow down my Mac? The app is under 1 MB, there's no background service, and nothing runs outside youtube.com. Swapping the player costs a moment at the start of a video, which is the brief black frame you'll see. ## Price ### What does it cost? 30 ad-free videos a month, free. $4.99 once for unlimited. That's the whole price list. ### Is $4.99 a subscription? No. You buy it once and keep it. Nothing renews and there's nothing to cancel. There was a yearly subscription in earlier versions. It's gone, and anyone who bought it keeps unlimited access while it's active. ### What exactly is free? 30 ad-free videos every calendar month, all features, no account, no card. The counter resets on the 1st and the popup always shows the date. It's not a trial. If 30 a month covers you, you never pay. ### What happens when I run out? Whatever you're watching keeps playing ad-free — Adios won't cut into a video you've started. After that YouTube's normal player comes back until the 1st, or until you buy the unlock. ### Second Mac? Reinstalling? Covered. The unlock is on your Apple Account, so it follows you to any Mac you sign in with. Press “Restore Purchase” in the app if it doesn't show up straight away. ### Refunds? Apple handles those, at reportaproblem.apple.com. If something's broken though, email me first — [adios.contact@pm.me](mailto:adios.contact@pm.me) — it's usually faster to just fix it. ### Why so cheap? What's the catch? No catch and no second business model. No ads, no data collection, no affiliate links, no upsells. I wrote it, you pay once, that's the arrangement. The honest downside of a one-off price is that it has to fund maintenance indefinitely. I picked it anyway — billing people every year for something this small felt worse. ## Privacy ### What do you collect? Nothing. No analytics, no crash reporting, no tracking, and no server of mine for any of it to go to. There's no account, so there's nothing to attach to you in the first place. ### What's stored, then? On your Mac: whether you chose Auto or Manual, how many videos you've watched this month, and whether you've bought the unlock. Delete the app and it's gone. ### Do you know what I watch? No. The extension necessarily runs on the YouTube page you have open — that's how it swaps the player — but it doesn't record, store or send what you watch. The only number kept is a count, locally, for the free tier. ### What permissions does it want, and why? A script on youtube.com, so it can tell you've opened a video and swap the player. Local storage, for your settings and the count. That's it — it can't read any other site. ### Does it touch my YouTube account? No. It doesn't sign in, change settings or touch your subscriptions. Watch history can behave differently for videos played in an embed, but that's YouTube's behaviour for embeds, not something Adios does. ## When it isn't working Two things account for nearly every report: the site permission, and not being in Safari. Start at the top. ### It's installed but nothing happens Almost always the site permission. Open a YouTube video, click the Adios icon next to the address bar, choose “Always Allow on Every Website”, then reload the tab. Until that's granted Safari won't let Adios run on the page at all. After that: check it's ticked in Safari → Settings → Extensions. And check you're actually in Safari — it can't work in Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Brave or Arc. ### It worked yesterday, not today You probably picked “Allow for One Day”, which Safari revokes daily. Grant it again and choose the “Always” option. Or your 30 free videos are used up for the month — the popup shows the count and the reset date. ### The icon isn't in Safari's toolbar Enable the extension first (Safari → Settings → Extensions). If it's on and still hidden, right-click the toolbar, choose “Customize Toolbar…” and drag the Adios icon into place. ### I can hear two soundtracks Reload the page. Adios stops and mutes the original player as part of the swap and keeps checking that it stays stopped, but a reload clears any stuck state instantly. If one particular video does it every time, send me the link. ### The player is black or blank Reload. There's a watchdog that restores YouTube's normal player when the embed doesn't start, so it should sort itself out within a few seconds — reloading is just faster. If it happens repeatedly on the same video, that's worth reporting. ### It starts from the beginning instead of where I was Your timestamp is passed to the new player, but a swap very early in playback, or on a page restored from a previous session, can land at the start. Normal use keeps your position. ### The player looks slightly different It is a different player — YouTube's embed one, with the controls arranged a little differently. Quality, captions, speed and fullscreen all still work; watch-page extras like the miniplayer don't. ### It doesn't work in a private window Safari treats those separately. In Safari → Settings → Extensions, check Adios is allowed in Private Browsing. ### I bought it and it still says I'm out of free videos Open the app once so it can refresh the purchase, then reload the YouTube tab. Still stuck? Press “Restore Purchase” in the app, and if that doesn't do it, email me — purchase problems jump the queue. ### How do I get rid of it completely? Your macOS version, a link to a video where it goes wrong, and what you saw instead will get it fixed much faster — a screenshot beats a description. ## Who's behind it ### Is this against YouTube's terms? Adios plays YouTube's own embed player — a public feature for embedding videos — and doesn't download, copy, redistribute or get around any access control. That said, I'm not a lawyer and YouTube's terms are YouTube's to interpret. If supporting ad-funded YouTube matters to you, Premium pays creators directly and Adios doesn't pretend otherwise. ### Are you affiliated with YouTube or Google? Not at all.
